Former midfielder Lee Cattermole has been appointed manager of National League club Gateshead, signing a two-year contract. The 38-year-old succeeds former Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot, who previously held the managerial position at the club.

Cattermole’s playing career included stints with Middlesbrough, Wigan Athletic, and Sunderland. After retiring from professional football, he took on coaching roles at Middlesbrough and Bristol Rovers, gaining experience that has now led to his first permanent managerial appointment.

Expressing enthusiasm for his new role, Cattermole emphasized a collaborative approach, stating that he is not coming in with a fixed agenda but aims to build the team together with players and staff. “I’ve been clear I want to be a manager and I’m excited for the challenge,” he said.

Gateshead’s interim chairman, Graham Wood, highlighted that Cattermole stood out among other candidates during the selection process. Wood’s endorsement signals confidence in Cattermole’s potential to guide the club forward.

The appointment marks a notable step in Cattermole’s post-playing career as he transitions into management at a club competing in the fifth tier of English football. Gateshead will be looking to leverage his experience both on and off the pitch as they seek to establish greater stability and success in the National League.
