Leeds United goalkeeper James Trafford was responsible for a costly error in the club’s recent clash, which ultimately contributed to their defeat. The incident occurred during the first half, when the visitors appeared to be in control of the match and believed they had taken the lead through Dominic Calvert-Lewin. However, the goal was disallowed for a handball, leaving Leeds in a strong position.
The turning point came from a routine goal-kick. Trafford received the ball but attempted a short pass to teammate Ao Tanaka, only to inadvertently give possession away to Justin Kluivert of the opposition. Kluivert quickly set up Evanilson for an easy tap-in. The mistake bore a striking resemblance to an earlier error Trafford made during his second league appearance for Manchester City against Tottenham Hotspur last season. In that earlier incident, a similar short goal-kick was reclaimed by opposition players, leading to a goal. Shortly thereafter, Manchester City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma, which effectively ended Trafford’s prospects at the club.
Since moving to Leeds, Trafford has shown signs of reviving his career, but this latest miscue underscored ongoing concerns about handling pressure in critical moments. Although Leeds remained competitive following the goal, they were eventually undone by Amine Adli’s decisive finish during stoppage time, which sealed the victory for the visitors.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke acknowledged the goalkeeper’s qualities despite the mistake, describing him as a “terrific young goalkeeper” and expressing confidence in his ability to contribute positively to the team over time. “I’m pretty sure he will save us way more points than he has cost us,” Farke said, highlighting the long-term potential he sees in Trafford.
