Qatar’s Internal Security Force, known as Lekhwiya, has solidified its position as a leading provider of specialized security for major international sporting events. Building on its key role in securing the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, regarded as one of the safest and most efficiently managed editions of the tournament, Lekhwiya has expanded its global presence through partnerships and operational deployments in multiple countries.

The World Cup in 2022 marked a significant milestone for Qatar’s security infrastructure. Lekhwiya managed complex security challenges including crowd control, venue protection, and safeguarding official delegations and spectators. The success of this operation established a framework that has since been recognized internationally as a benchmark for managing large-scale sporting events.

Following this achievement, the experience gained by Lekhwiya has facilitated Qatar’s emergence as a hub for security expertise. Under a January letter of intent signed between Qatar and Canada, a Qatari contingent arrived in Vancouver in June 2026 to support security operations for the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The deployment was welcomed by Qatar’s ambassador to Canada, Tariq Ali Faraj al-Ansari, and will last through the tournament’s conclusion on July 7.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Qatar’s Minister of Interior and Commander of Lekhwiya, emphasized the importance of the mission, citing it as evidence of the growing international recognition of Qatar’s security capabilities. He noted the deployment as a model that enhances Qatar’s leadership role in securing major sporting events.

Beyond North America, Lekhwiya’s involvement in international security extends to Europe. Under a cooperation agreement with France, Qatari security personnel participated in safeguarding the Rugby World Cup 2023, the Tour de France, and preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Qatari contingent brought diverse operational expertise including counterterrorism, explosive ordnance disposal, drone operations, cybersecurity, and riot control. Units such as the elite “Lefdawiya” special forces, bomb disposal teams, and cyber intelligence squads were part of the comprehensive security effort in Paris.

Qatar is also preparing to contribute to security efforts for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy, further underscoring its expanding role in international event security.

Domestically, Lekhwiya continues to enhance its readiness through ongoing training and development while securing high-profile national events such as the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix, FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025, and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. The force also supports Qatar’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games and remains vigilant in maintaining national stability and safety.

Officials emphasize that Lekhwiya’s accomplishments are the product of a long-term strategic vision involving sustained investment in human capital, cutting-edge technologies, and rigorous professional standards. With deployments spanning North America, Europe, and beyond, Lekhwiya has positioned itself as a trusted security partner for global sporting events, reinforcing Qatar’s contribution to international security and the successful management of world-class competitions.
