Emley secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Lancaster City at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground on Saturday, with Lewis Gould scoring his first league goal of the season to provide the decisive breakthrough. The win propelled Emley to 14th place in the league standings.
Lancaster began the match strongly, with Joe Amison testing Emley goalkeeper Ben Bottomley in the 10th minute, forcing a notable save. Lancaster's Charlie Bailey also had an opportunity denied by Bottomley, while Nic Evangelions showed skill in beating his marker but ultimately shot over the crossbar. Emley’s Gould had a couple of early chances but was unable to convert.
The deadlock was broken just before halftime when Gould was released through on goal. After rounding Lancaster keeper Brad Kelly, Gould calmly slotted the ball into the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after the interval, both teams saw goals disallowed for offside. Emley’s Niall Heaton headed in from a free kick but was flagged offside, and almost immediately afterward, Evangelions found the net for Lancaster, only to be ruled offside as well.
Despite late pressure, Emley held firm. Bottomley’s solid performance throughout earned him the player-of-the-match accolade. Gould had a chance late in the game to seal the victory when he broke clear of the offside trap but was denied by a save from Kelly.
The result marked an important step for Emley as they look to build momentum in the league, while Lancaster will seek to recover from the setback when they next take to the field.
