Newcastle and England defender Lewis Hall has disclosed his reasons for turning down a move to Manchester United this summer, citing the vision and ambitions presented by Newcastle’s new manager, Matthias Jaissle. The 22-year-old left-back was reportedly a target for Manchester United as they sought to reinforce their defense, but the Red Devils refrained from making a formal approach after Newcastle expressed a firm intention to retain their player.
Hall, who recently signed a new contract with Newcastle, emphasized his affinity for the club and confidence in Jaissle’s leadership as key factors in his decision to stay. “Whenever you’re linked to another team, you know you’re doing something right,” Hall said. “But at the same time, I knew how much I love playing here. Since the manager came in, I knew the ambitions and what we wanted to achieve.” He added that after limited discussions and training sessions with Jaissle, it was clear to him that the new coach would have a positive impact on Newcastle’s future.
The defender also praised Jaissle’s approach to coaching and his willingness to allow players freedom in their roles, provided defensive responsibilities are met. “He gives me the licence to express myself as long as I do the defensive work and do the running that’s required for this position,” Hall explained. “He’s been a positive for everyone so far.”
Newcastle have experienced a mixed start to the current Premier League season but have moved up to ninth place following a 2-1 victory over Hull City in which Hall scored. This performance helped Hall secure a recall to the England squad after missing out on selection for this summer’s World Cup.
Manchester United, meanwhile, remain focused on strengthening their defense in the upcoming transfer window. After prioritizing midfield acquisitions in the recent transfer period, the club continues to explore defensive options, including other targets such as Brighton’s Ferdi Kadioglu, Aston Villa’s Ian Maatsen, and Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas. Despite their interest in Hall, United appear to be considering a range of candidates as they plan for the next season.
