Lewis Hamilton has reemerged as a serious contender in the 2026 Formula One World Championship, with his recent victory at the Catalunya Grand Prix marking a significant turnaround in performance. The win on Sunday was Hamilton's first for Ferrari, propelling him to second place in the drivers’ standings behind Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.
Hamilton, 41, ended a nearly two-year winless streak with his 106th career victory at Barcelona. The triumph signals a notable shift from the difficult 2025 season when Hamilton struggled to finish on the podium and even publicly suggested that Ferrari consider replacing him. This season’s resurgence has coincided with both improved machinery and changes within the team, including a new race engineer, Carlo Santi, who Hamilton has playfully dubbed the "Italian Bono," referencing his former Mercedes engineer Peter Bonnington.
Ferrari has introduced a significant package of upgrades this year, the largest of any team, with eight major changes to their car. Hamilton credited the efforts of the factory staff for the car’s enhanced competitiveness. The improvements extend beyond the vehicle itself, with a more harmonious working environment now in place, replacing previously strained relationships that affected performance last year.
Mercedes has seen their dominance challenged in recent races. While Antonelli leads the championship, internal rivalry with teammate George Russell has occasionally compromised their team’s overall pace. Notably, both drivers have suffered setbacks: Russell retired in Canada, and Antonelli experienced an electrical failure at Catalunya. These issues, coupled with Ferrari’s gains, have narrowed the performance gap.
Toto Wolff, Mercedes' team principal, acknowledged Hamilton’s revival and cautioned rivals against underestimating the seven-time world champion. "If he smells blood, he goes," Wolff remarked, emphasizing Hamilton’s ability to capitalize when momentum shifts. Wolff also pointed to Hamilton’s personal stability as a factor, alluding to the driver’s ongoing relationship with US personality Kim Kardashian. "It helps me to have a partner, a stable family life—and they seem to be getting on really well," he added.
Hamilton himself has been vocal about rediscovering a sense of identity and confidence on the track. After the Barcelona win, he expressed gratitude to fans for their support, suggesting that the combination of personal contentment and professional upgrades has revitalized his campaign.
While Ferrari’s upgrades and operational improvements have played a crucial role in Hamilton’s return to form, the changing dynamics within Mercedes and the broader field underscore a season of shifting balances. Hamilton’s rivals will need to remain vigilant as the championship fight intensifies.
