Lily Allen has defended the pricing and format of her recent London concert amid criticism over the length and content of her performance. The British singer, who has been touring Europe since March in support of her fifth studio album, West End Girl, faced backlash after charging £86 for a show lasting just over an hour at the O2 Arena.
Criticism intensified after Allen took the stage at 9:10 p.m. and concluded by 10 p.m., with no opening act and minimal interaction with the audience. Rupert Hawksley, opinion editor of The Spectator, highlighted these points on social media, noting the absence of a support act, the late start, and the short set while charging premium ticket prices.
In response, Allen explained on the social media platform X that the late start was due to a brief wardrobe malfunction, specifically needing to change laddered tights. She emphasised that a support act was present, performing as the Dallas Minor Trio, a string orchestra accompanying Allen’s vocals and visuals, which include lyrics displayed on a screen to encourage audience participation. Allen described the show as an artistic choice focused on performing the West End Girl album in its entirety without direct audience engagement, stating that maintaining the “fourth wall” aids the storytelling aspect. She expressed pride in the tour and said she did not want attendees to feel shortchanged.
West End Girl, released in October, is Allen’s first album following a break from touring since 2018, when she promoted her previous album, No Shame. The new work reflects Allen’s personal experiences, particularly her separation from actor David Harbour earlier this year. The couple divorced after four years of marriage, and Allen’s album explores themes related to the breakdown of their open relationship.
Harbour, in an interview last month, acknowledged the complexity of the stories Allen presents through her music, noting that while he respects her artistic expression, the album does not represent his perspective. Allen previously spoke openly about the emotional toll of their relationship’s collapse, revealing she had sought treatment at a trauma clinic. However, she also highlighted positive aspects of her former marriage, including the experience their daughters had living in the United States.
Allen emphasised her compassion for Harbour, acknowledging that all parties involved had suffered in the process. Despite the controversy surrounding the price and duration of her recent shows, Allen maintains that her concert format and pricing reflect her artistic vision and the content offered during the performances.
