Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis are adapting their 2024 concept album, “Warriors,” into a full-length Broadway musical. The production, based on the narrative originally presented in the 1965 novel and the 1979 cult dystopian film of the same name, follows a street gang known as the Warriors as they navigate a perilous journey from the Bronx back to their home turf in Coney Island, Brooklyn, while evading rival gangs and law enforcement.

The musical is set to begin previews in March 2027, with an official opening scheduled for April 2027 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City. Jenny Koons has been announced as the director, while Miranda and Davis collaborate on the book. No casting details have yet been disclosed.

Miranda and Davis previously released the “Warriors” concept album, which reimagined core elements of the original story while introducing notable changes, including recasting the Warriors as an all-female gang. The album featured a diverse lineup of acclaimed artists such as Ms. Lauryn Hill, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Billy Porter, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Marc Anthony, Colman Domingo, Cam’ron, Shenseea, and Joshua Henry, among others.

Musically, the album incorporated a wide range of styles, blending salsa, ska, agro-rock, boy band pop, old-school rap, and K-pop influences. It also offered multilingual elements, including Spanish and Korean branches alongside English lyrics. Tracks from the album included “We Got You,” an R&B number performed by a male gang dressed in cardigans, and “Quiet Girls,” which was characterized as a feminist anthem.

The forthcoming stage adaptation marks Miranda’s first full musical project since “Hamilton.” Both creators expressed enthusiasm for bringing the vibrant and multidimensional world of “Warriors” to Broadway audiences, noting the creative challenge and excitement involved in translating the concept album into a theatrical experience.
