Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis are developing their concept album “Warriors” into a full-length Broadway musical set to debut next year. The production will begin previews in March 2027 and officially open in April at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City.
“Warriors” is based on the 1965 novel of the same name, which was also adapted into a cult dystopian film in 1979. The narrative centers on a street gang named the Warriors as they make a perilous journey from the Bronx back to their home turf of Coney Island, Brooklyn, while being pursued by rival gangs and law enforcement. Miranda’s upcoming musical marks his first full-length Broadway project since “Hamilton.”
The musical’s book is co-written by Miranda and Davis, with direction by Jenny Koons. No details regarding the cast have been revealed to date. Miranda and Davis previously collaborated on the concept album version of “Warriors,” released in 2024, which reimagined the gang as an all-female group and incorporated various artistic and stylistic adjustments to the original story.
The album featured an eclectic roster of contributors from diverse music genres, including Ms. Lauryn Hill, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Billy Porter, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Marc Anthony, Coleman Domingo, Cam’ron, Shensheeaa, and Joshua Henry. Musically, it fused elements of salsa, ska, agro-rock, boy band pop, old-school rap, and K-pop, with multilingual tracks in Spanish and Korean alongside English. Notable songs included “We Got You,” characterized as a seductive R&B number performed by a male gang, and “Quiet Girls,” described as a feminist anthem.
In a joint statement released Tuesday, Miranda and Davis expressed enthusiasm about the transition from album to stage, emphasizing the vibrancy of the story’s world and their excitement to bring it to Broadway audiences. The production aims to translate the energy and social commentary of the original narrative while offering a fresh perspective through its contemporary musical interpretation.
