Linda Cardellini takes on the role of Pamela Voorhees in the new Peacock series "Crystal Lake," a prequel to the iconic Friday the 13th franchise. The series, which marks the 50th anniversary of the original film, explores the backstory of Pamela, originally portrayed by Betsy Palmer in the 1980 movie, tracing her evolution from a grieving mother to the notorious killer central to the franchise’s mythology.

Pamela Voorhees was the original antagonist in the 1980 film, where she exacted revenge on counselors at Camp Crystal Lake after the drowning of her son, Jason. Though Jason later became the primary villain in subsequent sequels, Pamela’s brief but memorable role established the origins of the horror saga. The new series delves into her complex relationship with a young Jason, played by Callum Vinson, portraying the challenges they face as outsiders, including Jason’s health struggles and bullying.

Cardellini described the responsibility of embodying such an iconic character as both daunting and rewarding. She acknowledged Betsy Palmer’s powerful performance and noted that her portrayal draws on subtle elements of Palmer’s original characterization while expanding on Pamela’s darker and more nuanced traits. “The show looks at the making of a monster, but his mother is also a monster,” Cardellini said.

The actor, fresh from winning a supporting actress Emmy for her role in the HBO limited series "DTF St. Louis," highlighted the contrast between her characters. While her previous role involved a woman seeking control, Pamela is depicted as exerting control driven by rage and repression, motivated by maternal devotion to Jason.

Brad Caleb Kane, creator and showrunner of "Crystal Lake," emphasized Pamela’s foundational place in the Friday the 13th universe and said casting Cardellini was essential due to her ability to convey empathy amid the character’s violent actions. Kane described Pamela as “the mother of all slashers” and praised Cardellini’s “effortless likability,” which adds depth to the series’ exploration of the character.

Filmed during a New Jersey summer, the production presented physical challenges, with Cardellini recalling nighttime shoots in the woods amidst natural hazards like snakes and ticks. She also praised Vinson’s performance under difficult prosthetic conditions, noting his maturity in handling emotionally demanding scenes.

The series aims to offer viewers a deeper understanding of the franchise’s narrative by focusing on the human elements behind the horror, especially the early relationship between Pamela and Jason. Cardellini hopes this approach will resonate with fans, providing a fresh perspective on a character whose story has often been overshadowed by the iconic masked killer.
