Regan Linney’s first-half brace guided Carlisle United to a narrow victory over Tamworth, securing their place in the first round of the competition. The match, held on home ground, marked Carlisle’s first win at home since August 31.
Carlisle opened the scoring early, with Linney redirecting a Micah Obiero attempt into the net within seven minutes. The Cumbrians continued to dominate the opening stages and extended their lead just before halftime. In stoppage time of the first half, a partially cleared cross found Linney, who struck from close range to make it 2-0.
Tamworth responded shortly after the break, reducing the deficit through Riccardo Calder, who headed in a cross delivered by Tom McGlinchey in the third minute of the second half. Despite the goal, Tamworth struggled to capitalize on several close opportunities. TJ Bramble came close to equalizing, including a shot that hit the post after Carlisle keeper Archie Mair had parried an attempt from Teo Kurtaran into Bramble’s path.
Carlisle also threatened in the second half, with Obiero’s chipped effort over Tamworth goalkeeper Rhys Lovett being cleared off the line. Tamworth posed a late challenge when Kiernan Donnelly sent a header on target, but Carlisle managed to hold on to their lead until the final whistle.
The 2-1 result secures Carlisle’s advancement while ending their run of home matches without a win. The match highlighted Linney’s crucial contributions and the resilience of both sides throughout a closely contested encounter.
