Lalisa Manobal, known mononymously as Lisa, the Thai singer and member of K-pop sensation Blackpink, has opened up about her journey beyond the group in a new documentary titled "Always Lalisa." The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, chronicles a pivotal year in 2024 when Lisa stepped away from Blackpink to explore new creative avenues, including making her acting debut on the third season of the Hollywood drama series "The White Lotus," which aired in 2025.
At 29, Lisa reflected on her early career, revealing that she moved alone from Thailand to South Korea at age 14 to pursue her dream of becoming a performer. After auditioning for YG Entertainment at 13, she underwent a rigorous five-year training period, learning Korean and honing her skills before debuting with Blackpink. Lisa acknowledged the difficulties of adapting to life in a foreign country at such a young age but emphasized the strong bond among Blackpink’s members—Jennie, Jisoo, and Rose—which helped her overcome challenges and created a sense of family within the group.
During her year-long hiatus from Blackpink, Lisa focused on personal growth and experimentation, particularly seeking to broaden her artistic range. Traditionally positioned as a rapper in the group, she described her break as an opportunity to develop her singing abilities and embrace new pursuits. Lisa described the period as both intensive and rewarding, balancing time in Thailand with music-related activities in Los Angeles, while also prioritizing spending time with family.
The documentary features candid interviews and behind-the-scenes moments, with Lisa crediting director Sue Kim for creating a supportive environment that enabled her to openly discuss sensitive topics. She expressed appreciation for the chance to share a more personal side with fans, including footage from her childhood and reflections on her family. Lisa highlighted the critical role her mother and stepfather played in supporting her ambitions, noting their trust when she relocated abroad at a young age and their ongoing encouragement throughout her career.
Despite occasional feelings of loneliness during her solo projects, Lisa emphasized the close connection she maintains with her Blackpink bandmates, underscoring the mutual respect and support that continued throughout their individual endeavors. Upon reuniting, the group experienced renewed energy and confidence, fueled by the growth each member achieved independently.
Lisa also shared an emotional practice she carries into performances: inviting the presence of her late grandfather and dance teacher, both of whom were significant influences in her life but passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic. She described them as her guardian angels, watching over her as she performs.
"Always Lalisa" will be released in cinemas across Singapore on October 12.
