Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez criticized the club’s leadership following their 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday. Speaking candidly after the match, Martínez called for greater investment and changes at the higher levels of the organisation rather than focusing criticism on the interim manager, Michael Carrick.

Martínez highlighted concerns over Manchester United’s summer transfer activity, noting that the club spent £155 million but failed to adequately strengthen key positions. “I expect more, 100 per cent. I expect more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox],” he said. The defender also acknowledged the players’ responsibility to improve but stressed the importance of having a stronger squad to compete at the highest level. “It is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night. Really poor,” Martínez said, reflecting on the team’s performance against Diego Simeone’s side.

United returned to the Champions League this season but have struggled to find consistency, recording only two wins so far. Atlético Madrid’s strong showing was evident, with Martínez conceding that they deserved the victory.

When asked about calls for managerial changes, Martínez rejected the notion that Carrick should be removed from his role. “He does his best. You can’t keep changing, changing, changing the manager. What about other areas?” he responded, indicating that systemic issues beyond the coaching staff might be contributing to the club’s difficulties.

The remarks underline ongoing frustrations within Manchester United following a disappointing start to the new campaign, with questions mounting over transfer strategy and club leadership amid high expectations after a successful previous season.
