The University of New Mexico football program secured commitments from three high school seniors last week, including a notable linebacker from Mater Dei High School, one of the nation’s top football programs. These additions are expected to strengthen the Lobos’ recruiting class for 2027.

Linebacker LBDJ Clanton, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound athlete, pledged to New Mexico despite receiving offers from several other schools, including Arizona State, Utah, Oregon State, Colorado State, San Diego State, UNLV, and Sacramento State. Clanton, rated as a three-star prospect, is the first linebacker in the Lobos’ class of 2027 to make a commitment. He recorded 63 tackles, including six tackles for loss, during his senior season at Mater Dei in California. According to 247 Sports, Clanton ranks as the 95th-best player from California in the 2027 recruiting class. Upon committing, he expressed his enthusiasm on social media, stating he was “honored to be a part of the Lobo family.”

Joining Clanton is tight end Collin Benninger, who committed to New Mexico following an official visit over the weekend. Benninger, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 225 pounds, announced his decision on social media Sunday. His addition bolsters the Lobos’ offensive options, adding size and athleticism at the tight end position.

The Lobos hosted several undecided recruits and existing verbal commitments during the recent weekend visit, intended to introduce prospects to the program and campus environment. These efforts are part of New Mexico’s ongoing strategy to build a competitive roster for the coming seasons.

With these commitments, the Lobos are gradually shaping a promising recruiting class as they look to improve their standing in collegiate football. Further announcements are anticipated as the recruiting cycle progresses.
