Brian Devine, a cricketer involved in a growing controversy surrounding alleged cheating in amateur cricket, has been suspended indefinitely by his club, Saltburn Cricket Club, amid an ongoing investigation. The situation arose after footage emerged showing Devine apparently clicking his fingers while fielding, seemingly to imitate the sound of a ball striking the bat and potentially misleading umpires.

The video, initially sparking public outcry, was posted on the Play Cricket website and involved a match where Devine played for Saltburn’s second team. In one highlighted incident, the gesture reportedly influenced an umpire’s decision to give a batsman out, contributing to Saltburn’s 159-run victory in that game. The club confirmed they had suspended Devine and were cooperating fully with the North Yorkshire and South Durham (NYSD) League’s investigation. Saltburn also canceled their scheduled fixture against Marton amid the controversy.

Further scrutiny revealed that this was not an isolated incident. Additional footage uncovered traces back to 2021, showing Devine employing the same finger-clicking technique during his time with a previous team, Pudsey St Lawrence, which competes in the Bradford Premier League. The earlier video, from a match in August 2021, shows Devine clicking his fingers when New Farnley was batting. Although Pudsey St Lawrence ultimately lost that game, Devine captained their second XI to a league title in 2023 before rejoining Saltburn in 2024. The resurfacing of this footage has prompted calls from some within the cricket community for an investigation by the Bradford Premier League, with at least one rival club source suggesting there is “a good case” to consider stripping Pudsey St Lawrence of their 2023 championship.

Saltburn, a club that described itself as “family-centric,” acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and emphasized its cooperation with the ongoing inquiry. They have yet to comment further on the matter, while the NYSD League investigation continues. The cricket community has largely condemned the conduct, which raises questions about fair play and integrity at the amateur level.

As the inquiries proceed, both leagues involved face pressure to assess the extent of the alleged misconduct and determine appropriate actions, including potential repercussions for Devine and the teams involved.
