Environmental specialists from the Environment Authority’s centre in Masirah, located in the Wilayat of Masirah within Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, recently recorded the sighting of a female loggerhead turtle on the island’s Al Aijah beach. This marks the first confirmed observation of the species there in 12 years.
Ghassi bin Hamad al Farsi, Supervisor of the Environmental Monitoring Department at the Authority’s Masirah centre, noted that the turtle had been tagged in the same location during the 2014 nesting season. The reappearance of this particular individual contributes to the ongoing documentation of loggerhead turtles along Masirah’s coastline.
Al Farsi highlighted the significance of the turtle’s return as evidence supporting the species’ well-documented behavior of site fidelity, an instinctive tendency for female loggerhead turtles to return to their original nesting beaches. He emphasized that this sighting confirms that the turtle remains reproductively active more than a decade after it was first tagged.
This observation is part of the Environment Authority’s broader monitoring efforts during the 2026 nesting season and contributes valuable data on the status and habits of sea turtles in the region. The continued tracking of such individuals aids in understanding the long-term reproductive patterns and conservation needs of loggerhead turtles in Omani waters.
