Jake Dennis vaulted to the top of the Formula E championship standings following a remarkable performance at the Tokyo ePrix, setting the stage for a decisive finale in London next month. The Andretti driver, who clinched the 2023 series title, overcame a difficult qualifying session hampered by heavy rain that left him starting 17th on the grid to secure a podium finish in the Sunday race.

Dennis delivered one of the standout drives of the season, steadily climbing through the field to eventually challenge race winner Nyck De Vries and second-placed Nick Cassidy on the penultimate lap. However, a red flag caused by a multi-car pile-up brought the contest to an abrupt end, denying Dennis a potential victory.

Reflecting on the race, Dennis said he had been 35 seconds behind the leader at one point before mounting his comeback. "It was there for the taking, but to be championship leader sounds incredible," he noted.

With the championship entering its final phase, Dennis holds a slim two-point advantage over Jaguar’s Mitch Evans ahead of the two-race London doubleheader scheduled for August 15 and 16 at the ExCeL Centre. The outcome of those rounds will determine the 2024 Formula E champion in what promises to be a tightly contested conclusion to the season.
