Authorities arrested a Long Island man on Tuesday following a fire that led to the rescue of dozens of neglected chickens at his residence. Victor Xu, 44, of Westbury, was taken into custody after emergency responders discovered 66 severely emaciated and dehydrated chickens confined in cages inside his home.

The fire, which broke out in the kitchen area, prompted officers to enter the property, where they found the animals in what officials described as “torturous conditions.” Among the rescued birds were 60 chicks still “peeping,” indicating they were very young and vulnerable.

John Di Leonardo, executive director of Humane Long Island, characterized the situation as unusual and distressing, highlighting the poor state in which the animals were kept. Law enforcement and animal welfare officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the neglect.

No injuries from the fire were reported, and the rescued chickens have received immediate care. Authorities have yet to release specific charges against Xu but indicated that the case will involve animal neglect violations.

The incident has raised concerns among local residents and animal rights groups about the welfare of animals kept in private homes and underscores the risks associated with improper care and confinement. Further updates on the legal proceedings are expected in the coming weeks.
