The Savannah Bananas, an entertainment-focused baseball team known for their unconventional approach to the sport, will make their first Canadian appearances in 2027 as part of an expanded international schedule. The announcement marks the team’s debut outside the United States, with stops in both Toronto and Winnipeg, alongside four dates in Mexico.
The Bananas’ unique version of baseball, branded “Banana Ball,” combines fast-paced gameplay with entertainment elements to engage a broader and younger audience. The league features modified rules, music, choreographed dances, fan participation, and trick plays designed to create a lively atmosphere that differs significantly from traditional baseball.
Founder Jesse Cole articulated the team’s mission as bringing fun to baseball, emphasizing speed and entertainment. Sporting his signature yellow tuxedo, Cole has been instrumental in shaping the league’s identity and growing its popularity since the Savannah Bananas transitioned from a collegiate summer team in Georgia to a full-time traveling show in 2022.
The 2027 Canadian dates are scheduled for August, with the Bananas playing at Toronto’s Rogers Centre on August 14 and 15 against the Indianapolis Clowns. The two Winnipeg games, on August 26 and 28, will see the Party Animals face off against the Texas Tailgaters. These games will take place at Blue Cross Park and Princess Auto Stadium, venues home to the Winnipeg Goldeyes minor league baseball team and the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers, respectively.
Tickets for Banana Ball games are allocated through a lottery system available on the league’s website, bananaball.com. The Toronto dates coincidentally fall during a period when the Toronto Blue Jays are scheduled to be on the road, playing against the Cleveland Guardians. However, with ongoing uncertainties surrounding Major League Baseball’s labor negotiations, the status of the entire 2027 season remains somewhat fluid.
Originating in 2016, the Savannah Bananas built a strong following in the Coastal Plain League before shifting entirely to Banana Ball. The Championship League now includes six teams with playful names such as the Loco Beach Coconuts, Texas Tailgaters, Indianapolis Clowns, Party Animals, and Firefighters. In 2026, these teams played 60 regular-season games each across 76 stadiums, including 14 MLB venues.
Banana Ball's distinct rules aim to maintain a brisk pace and enhance fan engagement. Games are capped at two hours, batters receive strikes for stepping out of the box, and there are no mound visits. Fans catching foul balls transform them into outs, and bunting is banned—an element Cole openly criticized on social media.
As Banana Ball continues its rapid growth, organizers expect the 2027 Championship League tour, encompassing 74 cities in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, to attract an estimated 4.3 million fans, reinforcing the sport’s evolving appeal through an innovative and entertaining lens.
