Barisan Nasional (BN) is preparing to engage in separate discussions with two unnamed political groups next week to explore potential alliances for the upcoming Melaka state election, according to BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He confirmed the meetings would take place on different days but did not disclose the identities of the parties involved.

Speaking after opening a national discourse event titled "Unravelling the Malay Peninsula Polemic" in Melaka, Ahmad Zahid emphasized that no decisions had been made regarding which group BN would partner with. He stressed the importance of thoroughly evaluating both the advantages and disadvantages of any alliance, with a focus on the medium- and long-term benefits for the coalition and the country.

When asked whether BN would engage directly with the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS)—a key component of the Perikatan Nasional coalition, which is facing registration issues with Malaysia's Registrar of Societies—Ahmad Zahid deferred the matter to the Umno secretary-general and the chairman of Perikatan Nasional. He indicated a preference for dealing with a stable individual party rather than a coalition perceived as fragmented.

Ahmad Zahid, who also serves as president of Umno, called for political differences to be managed maturely to safeguard national harmony and stability. He underlined the need for consensus on issues relating to religion, race, and the nation, advocating continued efforts to unite the Malay-Muslim community despite political divergences. He further noted that any consensus should be rooted in the Federal Constitution and uphold the rights of all citizens.

Addressing the role of the monarchy, Ahmad Zahid cautioned that political disagreements must not undermine respect for the royal institution. He said a clear understanding of the positions and responsibilities of different institutions is essential to prevent conflicts. He also underscored the importance of respecting the Federal Constitution, even when its decisions do not align with the expectations of certain parties.
