Drew Doughty contributed a goal and two assists while Artemi Panarin added a power-play goal and an assist as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the New York Rangers 6-3 Monday night at Madison Square Garden. The victory marked the Kings’ third win in their last four games, all on the road, following an 0-6 start to the season.
The Kings quickly took control of the game, scoring three times in the first period and prompting a goaltender change for the Rangers. New signing James Reimer, making his Rangers debut, was pulled after allowing three goals on eight shots. Reimer had appeared in only one game this season—a 35-save shutout in the American Hockey League on Saturday—before signing an NHL contract with New York for the remainder of the season.
Taylor Ward opened the scoring just 1:15 into the contest on the Kings’ first shot. Brandt Clarke extended the lead to 2-0 at 4:52 of the first period by tipping in a rebound off a Joel Armia slap shot. The Rangers got on the board when J.T. Miller redirected a Tye Kartye slap shot past Los Angeles goaltender Darcy Kuemper. Kuemper, who made 23 saves in the game, earned his third victory of the season.
Los Angeles maintained momentum in the second period with additional goals from Mikey Anderson and Taylor Ward. New York’s Adam Fox responded with a power-play goal at 6:55 of the second, narrowing the deficit to 5-2. The Rangers continued to battle in the third period as Kartye scored again to bring the visitors within two goals at 16:08. However, Joel Edmundson secured the final margin by scoring an empty-net goal, his first of the season.
Dallas Kuemper’s counterpart, Dylan Garand, who replaced Reimer early in the game, made 15 saves on 17 shots faced. The game began with a moment of silence honoring Ron Duguay, a longtime Rangers fan favorite from the 1970s and 1980s, who passed away last week.
The Rangers are scheduled to host the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.
