Louis Moult has completed a move to AFC Telford United, returning to Non-League football to reunite with manager Kevin Wilkin, who he credits with reviving his career in its early stages. The 34-year-old striker signed a one-year contract with the National League North side ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Moult’s career nearly stalled a decade ago following his release from Northampton Town in May 2013, shortly after being let go by Premier League club Stoke City. At 20 years old, he faced uncertainty about his future in professional football. Wilkin, then managing Nuneaton Town, provided a pivotal opportunity, bringing Moult into the National League and helping him regain confidence and find form. Moult regards Wilkin’s support and belief as foundational to all he has since achieved.
“The key for me was his man-management,” Moult said of Wilkin’s influence. “He knew when I needed encouragement rather than criticism, and that belief gave me the confidence to keep going.” During the 2013-14 season, Moult scored 17 goals for Nuneaton before following Wilkin to Wrexham, where he added another 16 goals.
Moult’s progress from Non-League football continued with a move to Scottish Premiership club Motherwell, where he scored 38 goals in 84 appearances. His performances there earned him a transfer to Championship side Preston North End in the 2017-18 season. Reflecting on the step up, Moult described the Championship as a physically demanding league featuring highly athletic players. Despite injury setbacks limiting his appearances to 50 matches, he managed to score seven goals and values the experience of competing at that level.
After spells with Burton Albion and a successful return to Scotland at Dundee United—where he scored 20 goals during the 2023-24 season to help the club win the Scottish Championship—Moult spent the previous season in English League Two with Crewe Alexandra.
Joining AFC Telford represents a significant drop in league level for Moult, who acknowledged the difference but dismissed concerns about the move being a step backwards or winding down his career. Having witnessed his brother Jake’s decade-long tenure at National League North side Altrincham, Moult is familiar with the competitive nature of the league. He praises Telford’s infrastructure, fanbase, and ambitions as motivating factors in his decision.
“It’s exactly what we want as footballers,” Moult said. “I don’t see this as winding down—this is something that will give me a buzz, and I’m absolutely delighted to be here.”
Over the course of his career, Moult has accumulated 123 goals in 363 professional appearances, including an international call-up for England C. His return to Non-League football with AFC Telford offers a full-circle moment with the manager he credits for sustaining his professional journey.
