The production team behind “Love Island USA” is mourning the unexpected death of executive producer James Barker, who died last week while on location in Fiji. Barker, 40, passed away following what was described as a sudden medical emergency, according to a joint statement from ITV America and Peacock, the companies responsible for the series. Specific details regarding the exact date and cause of his death were not disclosed.

Barker had been a key figure on “Love Island USA” since 2020, initially joining the show as a story producer before advancing to an executive producer role for the past three seasons. He also contributed to “Love Island” companion series including “Love Island Games” and “Love Island: Beyond the Villa.” Beyond his production duties, Barker played a significant role in crafting the series’ pop music soundtrack, drawing from a personal background as a nightlife DJ known as DJ Chaotic in Brooklyn’s New York gay bar scene.

In a 2025 interview, Barker reflected on the influence of the original British “Love Island” series, highlighting how its integration of pop music complemented the unfolding romances and drama on screen. He cited this blend as a key inspiration for his approach to curating the villa’s soundtrack, focusing on a mix of established pop artists and emerging musicians. Barker also observed a shifting attitude toward reality television within the music industry, noting that artists increasingly recognize the financial benefits and broad exposure offered by song placements on such shows.

Prior to his work on “Love Island USA,” Barker amassed experience on other reality TV programs, including “Pawn Stars,” “Counting Cars,” and “Forged in Fire.” He also served as a story producer on titles like “Queer Eye,” “Cosmic Love,” and “Are You My First?” His multifaceted career bridged television production and live music, establishing him as a respected figure in both arenas.

“Love Island USA,” which premiered its eighth season earlier this month, planned to honor Barker with a tribute in the episode airing Tuesday. Barker is survived by his mother, Malinda. The production companies expressed deep condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, acknowledging his kindness, talent, and the lasting impact he made on the series and those who worked alongside him.
