Lufthansa Group, Europe’s largest airline operator, announced plans to increase its stake in Italy’s ITA Airways to 90 percent, solidifying its majority control of the Italian carrier. The move follows Lufthansa’s initial acquisition of a 41 percent minority share in ITA Airways in January 2025.
The German airline group said it intends to exercise its option to purchase the additional shares in June at a previously agreed price of 325 million euros (approximately $382 million). The transaction, which was approved by Lufthansa’s board on Monday, remains subject to regulatory clearance from authorities in both the European Union and the United States.
Under the agreement, the Italian government, which previously held a 59 percent majority stake, will retain a 10 percent interest in ITA Airways. With the expanded ownership, ITA Airways will be fully integrated into the Lufthansa Group’s organizational and financial structure.
This acquisition represents a continued trend of consolidation within the European aviation sector, with Lufthansa expanding its footprint in the Italian market. The integration aims to create a more unified operational framework across the group’s portfolio of airlines.
