Abril Rios, a part-time aide to Jersey City Councilman Jake Ephros, has attracted attention for her outspoken support of Luigi Mangione and controversial remarks regarding a high-profile murder case. Rios, who identifies as a “Mangionista,” works in media and constituent services for Ephros, a Democratic socialist representing Jersey City.

Ephros confirmed Rios’s role in his office, noting she assists with social media management and district office activities. “Abril is a communications professional with valuable experiences who contributes a lot to the daily works of our office,” Ephros said in a statement.

Rios became a subject of public scrutiny after she openly described the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, as “more of a revolutionary act of protest.” The characterization drew strong reactions given the violent nature of the crime. Thompson was murdered in an incident that has since been the focus of legal proceedings.

The aide has also been seen prominently displaying her press credentials from Mayor Mamdani’s administration during court hearings related to the case. Her visible presence at these hearings further fueled debate about her actions and statements.

While some view Rios’s stance as an extreme political expression, Ephros emphasized her professional contributions to his office. The situation underscores tensions surrounding political activism intersecting with official governmental roles.
