Patti LuPone, the three-time Tony Award-winning actress known for her commanding stage presence and outspoken personality, is set to star in a one-woman Off Broadway production this winter. The play, “Full Gallop,” will open at New York City Center’s Stage II with previews beginning on January 8 and an official opening on January 17. The run is limited to 12 weeks.

“Full Gallop,” written by Mark Hampton and Mary Louise Wilson, centers on the life of Diana Vreeland, the influential fashion editor who shaped American style for several decades. Vreeland served as fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar from the late 1930s until the early 1960s, later becoming editor-in-chief of Vogue until 1971, and subsequently advised the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The play takes place in Vreeland’s Park Avenue apartment shortly after her dismissal from Vogue, capturing the resilience and distinctive flair for which the editor was renowned before her death in 1989.

Originally developed for Mary Louise Wilson and first staged at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego, the play enjoyed a successful run that included performances at City Center and the Westside Theater in New York. Critics praised the production for its vivid portrayal of Vreeland’s complex character. The upcoming staging marks a new iteration of the work, with LuPone as the sole performer.

Directing the show is Gordon Greenberg, who previously helmed an Off Broadway revival of “The Baker’s Wife” at Classic Stage Company. The production is being presented as a commercial venture in partnership with the nonprofit Manhattan Theater Club, which will feature the play in some of its subscription series. The commercial side is managed by producers Aaron Glick and No Guarantees Productions, the latter founded by Christine Schwarzman.

LuPone’s return to a substantial theatrical role comes after a period focused on concerts and cabaret performances. Last year, she issued a rare public apology following criticism over remarks made about actors Audra McDonald and Kecia Lewis in an interview. Prior to “Full Gallop,” her most recent full-scale Broadway appearance was in “The Roommate” earlier in 2024.

The upcoming production offers audiences an opportunity to see LuPone once again inhabit a demanding solo role, exploring the life of one of fashion’s most iconic figures.
