A luxury cruise ship operated by Florida-based Villa Vie Residences has been forced to suspend operations and remain docked in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, due to soaring fuel costs tied to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. The vessel, Odyssey, which can accommodate up to 650 passengers, has been at sea since October 2024 on an extended global voyage.

Villa Vie Residences announced on Tuesday that it is working to coordinate the disembarkation of passengers and assist with temporary accommodations amid the unexpected halt. The company described the spike in fuel expenses as “extraordinary,” with per-cabin fuel costs rising from an average of approximately $1,800 per month to between $6,000 and $8,000. This increase—more than 300 percent since the conflict between Israel and Iran escalated—has rendered the ship’s operating model unsustainable.

Unlike traditional cruise lines, Odyssey residents either own, rent, or have rent-to-own agreements for their cabins aboard the vessel. Cabin prices range from nearly $130,000 for standard accommodations to $440,000 for suites, with monthly maintenance fees between $2,000 and $10,000. The ship was initially scheduled for a continuous journey departing Belfast, Northern Ireland, with planned stops in ports such as Tonga, Australia, and India, where the voyage was expected to conclude in late 2026.

Since the outbreak of the Israel-Iran war in February 2024, the company has attempted to curb fuel consumption by slowing down the itinerary and increasing time spent in ports. However, these measures were unable to offset the dramatic rise in fuel prices. Villa Vie Residences acknowledged the disruption this situation poses for passengers, crew, and staff but did not provide specific details about future plans for the stranded individuals or the vessel.

The company stated it is currently exploring restructuring and recapitalization options over the next 60 days, emphasizing that the substantial fuel cost increases cannot be simply transferred to residents. Requests for further comment from Villa Vie Residences were not returned.
