Lyle Odelein, a former NHL defenseman and Stanley Cup champion, has died at the age of 58. His passing was confirmed on Friday through social media posts by several of the teams he played for during his professional hockey career, including the Montreal Canadiens. No cause of death has been disclosed.
Odelein, a native of Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, was selected by the Canadiens in the seventh round of the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. He played a total of 16 seasons in the NHL, appearing in 1,056 games across eight teams: the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, Phoenix Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, and Pittsburgh Penguins. He won the Stanley Cup with Montreal in 1993.
He concluded his NHL career with the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2005-06 season and later resided in the Pittsburgh area. Odelein was widely recognized for his physical style of play and leadership on the ice throughout his career.
