Lyon missed an opportunity to claim the top spot in Ligue 1 after suffering their first defeat of the season, falling 2-1 to Lens on Saturday at the Stade Bollaert in rainy conditions.

Florian Sotoca opened the scoring for Lens late in the first half, before Matthieu Udol extended the lead with a header in the 76th minute. Udol was subsequently shown a red card following a reckless challenge on Lyon's teenager Khalis Merah, who later scored a consolation goal for the visitors.

This victory marked the first league win for Lens under coach Yannick Cahuzac, who took over from Dino Toppmoeller last month after the German coach was dismissed following only six matches in charge. The result ended Lens’ four-game winless streak in Ligue 1 and lifted them to seventh place in the standings.

The win provides a crucial morale boost for Lens ahead of their upcoming Champions League fixture against Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Lyon remains two points behind league leaders Monaco. The team is preparing to face Crystal Palace, last season’s UEFA Conference League champions, in the Europa League on Friday.
