The former Beatle, 84, was seen waving to passengers while seated in a car alongside Hope Street, simultaneously sharing a video call with fellow Beatle Ringo Starr, whose face appeared on McCartney’s phone screen.
The encounter occurred during a scheduled tour led by guide Tony Curley and driver Neil Morton, who recognized McCartney and quickly informed the passengers. Morton, who has been driving Beatles-themed tours for two years, initially spotted McCartney waving the phone at him. Curley recalled McCartney greeting the group in a distinctly Liverpudlian manner, saying, “All right, lads. How are you doing?” The surprise interaction lasted only about a minute but left a memorable impression on the tour group.
The Magical Mystery Tour retraces significant locations linked to the Beatles’ early years, covering childhood homes, schools, and landmarks like Strawberry Fields—a short walk from John Lennon’s birthplace. Curley noted that the bus, driven by Morton, is a modern version of the vehicle used in the Beatles’ 1967 film "Magical Mystery Tour," a project originally conceived by McCartney himself. The tour spans approximately two hours and features changing playlists of Beatles songs, offering a unique experience for visitors of all ages. Curley observed an increase in younger attendees eager to explore the band’s roots alongside longstanding fans.
McCartney was in Liverpool to present actor Stephen Graham with a companionship honor from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), an institution McCartney co-founded in 1996 with educator Mark Featherstone-Witty. Graham, a Liverpool native, is known for his work on several acclaimed British television and film projects. The timing of McCartney’s visit to the city for this ceremony aligned with the chance encounter on the bus.
Curley and Morton expressed that such spontaneous meetings with McCartney are rare yet special occasions. The memorable meeting added an unexpected highlight to the ongoing tours dedicated to celebrating the Beatles’ enduring legacy in their hometown.
