The childhood home of Ian James, a friend of Sir Paul McCartney and the place where the musician first learned to play guitar, is being offered for sale at auction. The property, located at 43 Elswick Street in Liverpool, holds historical significance as the site where McCartney has said he first held a guitar and practiced his initial chords.
McCartney himself acknowledged the connection in a letter accompanying the guitar once owned by James. In the letter, McCartney described the instrument as the first guitar he ever played, crediting his time at James’s residence as formative in his musical development. That particular guitar was sold by Ian James in 2006 for £330,000.
The house is expected to attract interest from collectors and Beatles enthusiasts alike. Omega Auctions announced that the property will be auctioned on October 26, with an estimated sale price ranging from £150,000 to £170,000. The combination of its modest architecture and significant place in music history makes the home a notable offering on the Liverpool real estate market.
