The Mad Cool Festival in Madrid launched its four-day event on Wednesday with a high-energy performance by the Foo Fighters, who delivered a nearly two-and-a-half-hour set. Opening with hits such as "All My Life" and "The Pretender," the band’s frontman, Dave Grohl, was visibly affected by the 31-degree Celsius heat, prompting crew members to spray him—and the audience—with water to provide relief during the late-evening show.
The festival drew a diverse crowd, including Gene Gallagher, son of Liam Gallagher, who attended after his band Villanelle completed their set. He was seen enjoying the Foo Fighters’ performance with a drink in hand. Meanwhile, on a separate stage, 1990s dance icon Moby played to a packed audience. During his set, Moby reflected on his longtime connection to Grohl, noting their shared roots in the East Coast hardcore punk scene of the late 1980s. He recounted that their bands last performed together in Washington, D.C. with Minor Threat around 1986, highlighting the significance of their reunion decades later. At the time, Grohl was a member of Screaming, while Moby played with Vatican Commandos.
In addition to the Foo Fighters and Moby, the festival featured performances from a broad array of artists. On Wednesday night, the lineup included Lorde, Zara Larsson, and CMAT. The coming days are set to showcase well-known acts such as Kings of Leon, Nick Cave, Kasabian, and Pulp, promising a varied program of music across different genres. The event aims to establish itself as a major fixture on the European festival circuit, potentially rivaling prominent gatherings such as Glastonbury.
