The Los Angeles Angels secured a dramatic 7-6 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in extra innings on Wednesday at Angel Stadium, completing a come-from-behind rally that extended their winning streak and came with a significant boost to their season morale. This marked the Angels’ 12th comeback win and their sixth walk-off victory of the year, improving their record to 34-48.
The turning point came in the 10th inning when Nolan Schanuel advanced to third base due to an error, and Logan O’Hoppe delivered the game-winning run on a soft ground ball. After a changeup pitch, O’Hoppe made contact while attempting to check his swing, sending the ball toward first base where Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo failed to tag Schanuel, allowing the runner to score. The error capped a rally that had begun the previous two innings.
Pinch-hitter Vaughn Grissom ignited the comeback in the eighth inning with an RBI single, followed by Wade Meckler’s two-run single that tied the game. The Orioles took the lead again in the 10th on a single by Pete Alonso, but the Angels responded quickly to pull even and eventually walk off with the win.
Despite the loss, Baltimore’s catcher Samuel Basallo had a standout performance, hitting two home runs for his first multi-homer game at the major league level. At 21 years old, Basallo joins Francisco Alvarez of the New York Mets as one of the only catchers aged 21 or younger with a multi-homer game in MLB history.
The Angels’ scoring began early with a two-run homer by Jorge Soler in the first inning. Starter José Soriano pitched three innings, surrendering five runs on six hits while striking out four. Relief pitcher Chase Silseth earned the win, tossing 1⅓ innings in the 10th and giving up two hits and one run. Orioles reliever Keegan Akin was credited with the loss after allowing two runs and one hit in just two-thirds of an inning, blowing the save opportunity.
Looking ahead, the Angels will continue their homestand on Friday with right-hander Walbert Ureña (5-5, 2.41 ERA) scheduled to start against the Oakland Athletics.
