The family of Maddy Cusack marked the third anniversary of her death by emphasizing the importance of remembering her as a person beyond her career as a footballer. Cusack, who played for Sheffield United, was found dead at her family home in Derbyshire on September 20, 2023, at the age of 27.

An inquest into her death began in June at Chesterfield coroner’s court and was expected to have significant implications for English women’s football. After eight days of proceedings, the inquest was adjourned due to the emergence of new evidence, leaving the final outcome pending.

While awaiting the conclusion of the legal process, the Cusack family has turned their attention to the Maddy Cusack Foundation, established after her passing. The foundation aims to provide support for women footballers, particularly at the grassroots level, to help foster development and wellbeing within the sport.

On the weekend, family members and friends undertook a 29-mile walk from Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium to the Cusack family home in Derbyshire to raise funds for the foundation. By the following day, they had raised approximately £1,500.

Olivia Cusack, Maddy’s sister, said that when people were asked to describe Maddy, the descriptions were often “two-dimensional,” prompting the family to highlight a fuller picture of who she was as a person. “We want people to remember that she was a person and is greatly missed,” Olivia said.

The family encouraged donations to support their ongoing work through the campaign titled “Bring Maddy Back Home,” accessible via an online fundraising platform.
