Madonna has opened up about a past rift with her daughter Lourdes, revealing that their recent reconciliation inspired her latest album, *Confessions II*. The 67-year-old singer said that Lourdes, 29, approached her about collaborating on a song as a means to heal their relationship. This led to the creation of the track "The Test," which Madonna described as a turning point that solidified her decision to complete the album.

Madonna explained that storytelling is central to her songwriting, and for this album, she drew from personal family experiences, including what she called "family trauma," before shifting to more upbeat dance music. The artist also touched on her history of strained relationships within her family.

She recalled the difficult period following her divorce from Guy Ritchie in 2008, during which she lost contact with their son Rocco, now 25. Rocco stopped touring with Madonna during her *Rebel Heart* tour and chose to live in Devon with his father. Despite a court order requiring Guy Ritchie to return Rocco to Madonna in New York, the young man remained in the United Kingdom with his father. Madonna has described the custody battle as one of the most painful experiences of her life, likening the attempt to separate her from her child to an emotional devastation.

Since then, the family has reportedly reconciled, with Madonna repairing relationships not only with Rocco but also strengthening her bond with Lourdes. The new album also reflects other personal losses Madonna has endured in recent years, including the deaths of her stepmother Joan in September 2024 and her younger brother Christopher the following month, both from cancer.

Madonna said these events, combined with her daughter’s outreach, created a symbolic moment that compelled her to explore themes of loss and healing in her music. The album marks a reflective yet hopeful chapter in the singer’s life and career, as she navigates both personal grief and restored family connections.
