Magnus Carlsen of Norway secured his second consecutive Esports World Cup title at the event held this month at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. The tournament, conducted over four days in August 2026, featured rapid chess games with a time control of 10 minutes per player and no increment per move. Carlsen, the world’s top-ranked player, claimed the $250,000 first prize by remaining undefeated throughout the competition.
Carlsen's path to victory included wins over notable competitors from several countries. In the group stage, he defeated Russia’s Andrey Esipenko and the United States’ Hans Niemann with scores of 1.5-0.5. He advanced by overcoming India’s Nihal Sarin 2.5-0.5 in the quarterfinals and France’s Alireza Firouzja 4-1 in the semifinals. The final saw Carlsen face Belarusian Denis Lazavik, where Carlsen secured the title by winning two sets with identical 3-1 scores.
Denis Lazavik emerged as a standout performer during the tournament. Despite being ranked No. 110 globally in classical chess at 19 years old, Lazavik demonstrated elite skill in blitz formats, challenging some of the world’s best players and reaching the final. Carlsen acknowledged Lazavik’s consistency and strength in positional play, noting that the Belarusian “just doesn’t beat himself” by avoiding poor placements of his pieces.
Carlsen described his own winning approach as maintaining solid, careful gameplay, while capitalizing on opportunities as they arose. He emphasized the importance of playing “tight chess” throughout the event and attributed his unbeaten record partly to a measure of luck. The victory reinforces Carlsen’s dominance in rapid chess and esports competitions, following his previous championship win at Riyadh 2025.
