Wimborne Town advanced to the FA Cup first round for only the second time in their history after a late winning goal secured a 1-0 victory over National South side Chelmsford City. The decisive strike came from Wimborne’s South American forward Angel Diaz in the 84th minute at Wimborne’s home ground on Sunday.
Chelmsford, who hold a higher league status, dominated much of the opening half, creating several scoring opportunities. Their effort nearly paid off early when a long-range shot required a fine save from Wimborne goalkeeper Cam Plain, who was making his first appearance for the Magpies in nearly a year. Plain was also called upon near halftime to tip an acrobatic attempt from Rhys Browne onto the crossbar, preserving the clean sheet.
Despite Chelmsford’s control, Wimborne maintained a threat on the counterattack, with Diaz closely linking up with striker Joe Smith throughout the match. Early in the second half, Chelmsford came close to breaking the deadlock when substitute Lyle Taylor, a former Championship player, executed a lobbed shot that beat the keeper but struck the post.
The breakthrough finally arrived late in the game, when Diaz skillfully maneuvered through the defense before a clever flicked shot from a tight angle grazed the post and crossed the line. Following the goal, Wimborne’s defense held firm under pressure, maintaining their composure to secure the historic victory.
This result marked the second occasion this season that Wimborne has defeated a National South team, extending their unbeaten FA Cup run and ensuring their progression to the next stage of the competition. The Magpies’ resolute defensive performance alongside Diaz’s decisive contribution highlighted their capability to compete against higher-tier opposition.
