The Mahanagar Express, currently operating on the Dhaka-Chattogram route, is set to begin service on the Dhaka-Cox’s Bazar route starting at 8:00 p.m. on October 26. The first journey will be officially inaugurated by Railway Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam at Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka.
The announcement follows a statement made on August 1 by State Minister for Railways Habibur Rashid during his visit to the Cox’s Bazar Iconic Railway Station. Rashid had revealed plans to launch a new pair of intercity trains on the Dhaka-Cox’s Bazar route to address increasing passenger demand and alleviate chronic ticket shortages.
Authorities emphasized that the introduction of the Mahanagar Express on this route aims to enhance travel convenience, reduce passenger discomfort, and provide a more reliable and timely service for travelers. Given the popularity of Cox’s Bazar as a tourist destination, these efforts align with the government’s broader strategy to expand rail services and modernize passenger facilities to meet growing needs.
Railway officials highlighted that the government is committed to transforming the Cox’s Bazar Iconic Railway Station into a tourism-friendly hub that meets international standards. As part of this plan, the operation and management of the station will be delegated to a private organization to ensure efficient service delivery and improved passenger experiences.
The new service is expected to play a key role in boosting connectivity between the capital and Cox’s Bazar, facilitating both local and tourist travel as demand continues to rise.
