The Maharashtra government has initiated stringent measures to curb unauthorized fare hikes and financial exploitation of passengers by private bus operators in the state. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced the formation of a special committee to address complaints and recommend long-term solutions to these issues.

The committee, which will include the Deputy Transport Commissioner and three representatives from the Surajya Abhiyan campaign, was established following concerns raised during a meeting held at the ministry on Wednesday. The panel’s mandate is to oversee fare regulation for private buses, tackle illicit booking applications, and propose effective mechanisms to address passenger grievances.

Minister Sarnaik emphasized that once the committee submits its detailed report, a follow-up meeting will be convened to ensure swift implementation of the recommended measures. “Strict action will be taken against transport operators exploiting passengers financially, especially through unauthorized ticketing apps,” he said.

Complaints have escalated regarding private travel companies conducting bookings via unapproved mobile apps, particularly during festival seasons and holiday periods. Reports indicate that exorbitant ticket prices—sometimes more than double the usual fare—are being charged, contributing to widespread passenger dissatisfaction.

To strengthen oversight, the government has also directed improvements in communication infrastructure at bus stations. Each terminal is to provide accessible contact numbers dedicated to passenger assistance. Additionally, the transport department is tasked with issuing circulars to enforce the use of grammatically accurate Marathi names for towns and villages, including proper implementation of recent place name changes.

These initiatives reflect the state’s broader intent to protect commuters from unfair commercial practices by private operators, enhance accountability, and improve overall travel experience throughout Maharashtra.
