Eurostar has unveiled plans for its upcoming fleet of double-decker trains, which are set to enhance passenger capacity and onboard amenities when they enter service in 2031. The new trains, named Celestia, will introduce two-storey bars, a distinctive feature designed to elevate the travel experience on routes connecting London with mainland Europe.

The introduction of double-decker trains marks a significant shift for Eurostar, which has historically operated single-level trains due to infrastructure constraints within the United Kingdom. While many European countries, including Italy, France, and Spain, commonly operate double-decker trains, the lower height of UK rail tunnels has limited such deployments domestically. However, the high-speed rail line linking London with continental Europe is capable of accommodating taller trains similar to France’s TGV Duplex, Switzerland’s SBB IR Dosto, and Germany’s DB IC2 models.

Eurostar’s headquarters in Belgium announced that the Celestia trains will combine increased passenger capacity with enhanced onboard features, with the double-decker bar touted as the “star attraction.” According to a Eurostar spokesperson, the name Celestia reflects an aspiration to offer a “heavenly” travel experience that goes beyond the ordinary.

A total of 30 Celestia units have been ordered, with the first train expected to commence operations in May 2031. The new fleet aims to address growing demand on Eurostar routes while providing passengers with improved social and leisure spaces during their journeys across the Channel and beyond.
