Residents of Desa Mentari in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, gathered at a local multipurpose hall to commemorate Malaysia Day with a focus on community unity and support for vulnerable groups. The event, held on September 16, highlighted efforts to promote inclusivity through food distribution and health services, underscoring the importance of translating national unity into tangible assistance.

Datuk Mohd Anuar Taib, president of Sunway Group, emphasized that true unity entails ensuring no segment of society is overlooked. He noted that the company’s #SunwayforGood Food Programme, part of its National Day and Malaysia Day campaign themed “Sejahtera Bersama,” has benefited over 13,000 individuals nationwide through five targeted food initiatives. Recipients include indigenous communities, children, senior citizens, and families facing hardship.

The celebration at the Petaling Jaya City Council multipurpose hall (PJS6/1) was attended by Tengku Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, a princess of Selangor, who helped distribute free meals and beverages to approximately 2,000 residents. The refreshments were prepared by entrepreneurs affiliated with the Selangor Youth Community (SAY), with all expenses covered by Sunway Group. Additionally, free health screenings were offered on-site.

A notable component of the event involved 5,000 burgers crafted by residents of Rumah Sahabat Hulu Langat (RSHL), a local addiction rehabilitation center. The burger project was supported by SAY, which provided RM5,000 in startup capital and assisted with necessary business licensing and registration through the Companies Commission of Malaysia. SAY’s chief executive officer, Aiman Nazri, said the initiative helped the residents develop a viable business interest. Of the burgers produced, 2,000 were distributed during the event to residents of Desa Mentari.

Mohd Zaini Saleh, chairman of Desa Mentari Komuniti Madani, highlighted the importance of involving children in nation-building efforts. He stressed that Malaysia Day celebrations should serve as an opportunity to educate the younger generation about the country’s history and future direction. At the event, children dressed in vibrant traditional clothing performed the patriotic song "Saya Anak Malaysia" and enthusiastically waved the national flag, the Jalur Gemilang.
