Malaysia is seeking to enhance air connectivity and tourism collaboration with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the broader Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region to increase visitor arrivals from West Asia. The initiative was underscored during a recent working visit to Dubai by Chua Choon Hwa, deputy secretary-general (Tourism) at Malaysia’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac).

During the trip, Chua engaged with key stakeholders in the aviation and travel sectors, including major airlines and travel agencies. Among the outcomes of these discussions were the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between Tourism Malaysia and prominent carriers Emirates and Qatar Airways. These agreements aim to strengthen joint marketing and tourism promotion efforts between Malaysia and the GCC region.

Tourism Malaysia’s director-general, Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, also participated in the meetings. In addition to Emirates and Qatar Airways, Chua met representatives from other airlines such as Air Arabia, Gulf Air, and Etihad Airways, as well as travel agencies including Emirates Holidays, Sharaf Travel, Al Rais Travel, and Capital Travel (Tourism365).

The discussions addressed recent regional developments that have temporarily disrupted aviation and tourism activities in West Asia. Chua emphasized the importance of robust air connectivity as a foundation for expanding tourism ties. He noted that Dubai and Abu Dhabi serve as major international flight hubs, which could facilitate Malaysia’s access to additional markets in Africa and Europe.

Data from Tourism Malaysia indicates that from January to June 2026, a total of 30,257 visitors from the GCC countries arrived in Malaysia. The agency highlighted the market’s potential across segments such as family vacations, luxury travel, Muslim-friendly tourism, shopping, wellness, gastronomy, nature tours, and experiential travel.

These efforts align with the broader Visit Malaysia 2026-2027 campaign, which targets an increase in international visitor arrivals, including from the UAE, GCC countries, and the wider West Asian region. Tourism Malaysia affirmed its commitment to leveraging partnerships and industry collaborations to sustain growth in arrivals from these key markets.
