Malaysian humanitarian organizations are collaborating with Nepalese authorities to provide relief to communities affected by floods that struck the Nepal-China border on August 26. The floods followed a glacial collapse, which the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said generated energy comparable to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. The resulting debris flow and floodwaters traveled approximately 100 kilometers.

United Sikhs Malaysia is playing an active role in the relief efforts, focusing on delivering Shelter, Hygiene, and Nutrition Packs to families impacted by the disaster. The group’s president, Sunil Shukvir Singh, emphasized the urgency of addressing basic needs such as shelter, food, and cleanliness for those affected. United Sikhs Malaysia aims to provide aid to at least 1,000 families and is calling for donations, noting that RM500 can support one family. The organization is coordinating closely with relief centers established by Nepalese authorities to ensure aid distribution runs smoothly.

Meanwhile, Mercy Malaysia has deployed a small team of volunteers who arrived safely in Kathmandu on September 2. The group’s president, Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, confirmed that logistical arrangements proceeded according to plan, allowing the team to begin operations promptly.

At the time of reporting, the death toll from the floods had surpassed 1,000, with over 4,400 individuals still missing across Nepal and China. Rescue operations are ongoing, though efforts to reach afflicted areas remain challenging due to damaged infrastructure and difficult terrain.

Additionally, authorities have reported that 55 Malaysians remain unaccounted for following the disaster. Relief groups from Malaysia continue to monitor the situation closely while supporting international efforts to assist those affected.
