Malini Sahni, a distinguished Malayali educator and renowned public speaker in the Gulf region, passed away on October 13 at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar. She was widely recognized for her eloquence, commanding stage presence, and significant contributions to education and the Toastmasters community.

Sahni notably became the first woman Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), marking a historic milestone in the organization’s regional history. She also secured the top prize at the International Speech Contest held during the Gulf Toastmasters Annual Conference (GTAC) and earned second place in the prestigious World Taped Speech Contest, achievements that underscored her exceptional public speaking talent.

In addition to her personal accolades, Sahni was deeply committed to youth development and played a key role in founding numerous Gavels clubs—Toastmasters programs tailored for children—across GCC countries. These clubs provided young individuals with vital opportunities to enhance their public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and develop leadership abilities.

Originally from Kerala and raised in Kolkata, Sahni’s career as an English teacher took her across India and various Gulf cities, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, and Doha. Her final professional position was as an English lecturer at Qatar Aeronautical College.

Sahni had been contending with serious health issues for nearly three years. In June 2022, she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder. Her condition worsened following a cardiac arrest in July 2023, after which she remained bedridden in a coma-like state until her passing.

She is survived by her husband, Rajiv Sahni, who is the group head of Internal Audit at Al Malki Holding Group. Sahni’s enduring legacy encompasses her trailblazing achievements within Toastmasters, her dedication to nurturing young talent across the Gulf, and her mentorship of hundreds of individuals in various professional fields. Her contributions have left a lasting impact on the communities she served and the individuals she guided throughout her career.
