Mamdani’s commitment to wearing suits contrasts with the more casual styles favoured by his predecessors. Bill de Blasio often opted for shorts while Eric Adams frequently appeared in polo shirts or sweaters. Fashion commentator Ella Devi suggested that Mamdani’s style choice is a deliberate effort to present himself as perpetually working and professional. Devi also noted that Mamdani’s identity as a young, Muslim socialist likely plays a role in his sartorial consistency.

The mayor’s adherence to formal dress in informal settings appears to be a calculated strategy in a political climate where socialist figures frequently face heightened scrutiny, particularly from conservative media outlets. Hasan Piker, a Turkish American left-wing commentator, has publicly noted that dressing smartly can increase the receptiveness of a right-leaning audience to progressive viewpoints. According to a teammate who played with Mamdani prior to his election, the mayor habitually arrived on the field in a suit or suit pants and boots, changing attire only upon the start of play.
