A man was arrested on Monday after attempting to attack an Israeli kitchen tent with a knife during the Edmonton Heritage Festival in Alberta, Canada. The incident occurred amid a protest organized by local Jewish anti-Zionist groups and allied activists.
Security footage shared on social media shows an individual approaching the Israeli Pavilion before lunging at the kitchen tent with a knife. Festival security intervened promptly, detaining the man near a protective perimeter fence. The voices of protesters chanting slogans critical of Zionism were audible in the background during the confrontation.
Stacey Leavitt-Wright, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton and a co-organizer of the Israel Pavilion, confirmed the assault attempt and stated that local police are actively investigating the matter. She noted that charges against the suspect have yet to be announced.
According to Leavitt-Wright, the assailant managed to penetrate the Israeli Pavilion area and approached the back of the kitchen tent before a volunteer at the front alerted security. As the man lunged with the knife, a second volunteer intervened, preventing serious injury before security personnel subdued the individual.
The attack coincided with a nearly three-hour protest led by groups including Independent Jewish Voices Edmonton (IJVE), Edmonton Jews Against Zionism (EJAZ), and the MacEwan chapter of the Palestinian Student Alliance (PSA). Demonstrators opposed the presence of the Israel Pavilion at the festival, with signs calling to shut it down and chanting messages denouncing Zionism. Festival security maintained a separation between protesters and pavilion attendees.
In response, some community members rallied in support of the Israeli contingent, waving Israeli flags and chanting in favor of Israel’s leadership. Leavitt-Wright expressed disappointment at the disruption, emphasizing that the Israel Pavilion has participated in the festival for over 45 years and that the violent incident was not reflective of the festival’s spirit.
The attack in Edmonton follows a pattern of increasing threats and violence targeting Jewish institutions across Canada in recent months. Notable incidents include a suspected arson that destroyed Moan, a kosher restaurant in Montreal, and shootings at two locations of Kiva’s Bagel Bar, a Jewish-owned business in Toronto.
Authorities continue to investigate the Edmonton incident as the community processes the broader context of rising antisemitic incidents nationwide.
