A 72-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of former Nickelodeon actress Kianna Underwood earlier this year in Brooklyn. Michael Griffiths was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury and death, according to the New York Police Department.
Underwood, 33, was struck while crossing a street in the Brownsville neighborhood on the morning of January 16. The incident occurred around 6:50 a.m. at the intersection of Watkins Street and Pitkin Avenue. Surveillance footage obtained by authorities showed Underwood crossing against the pedestrian signal when a Ford SUV swerved across the double yellow line to pass a car stopped ahead. The vehicle collided with her in the crosswalk, propelling her across the intersection. Reports indicate a second vehicle then struck and dragged her after the initial impact.
Despite the severity of the collision, Griffiths has maintained his innocence, reportedly stating that he had “did nothing wrong.” The investigation has been ongoing since the incident, with authorities identifying Griffiths several months later. The charges reflect the seriousness of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, which carries significant legal consequences.
The case has renewed attention on pedestrian safety in Brooklyn’s Brownsville area, as well as the broader question of accountability in hit-and-run incidents. Police officials have not disclosed further details on the circumstances leading to Griffiths’ arrest or the evidence that supported the charges. The investigation remains active as the case proceeds through the legal system.
