A 58-year-old man has been charged following a fatal incident in Christchurch that left two people dead and two others seriously injured. Police responded to a call at a residence on Olliviers Road in the suburb of Phillipstown late on Friday night.

Detective Inspector Greg Murton confirmed that two individuals died at the scene, while two others were transported to hospital with severe injuries. The suspect faces two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one charge of wounding with intent. He is scheduled to appear in the Christchurch District Court on Monday, 12 October.

Authorities have indicated that the incident appears to be isolated, and they are not seeking any additional suspects. Detective Inspector Murton reassured the community that there is no ongoing threat to public safety, but acknowledged that the event will be distressing for local residents.

Police have warned that an increased law enforcement presence will remain in the area as investigations and forensic examinations continue. They have called on anyone with information or relevant CCTV footage to contact police via number 105 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Residents of Olliviers Road expressed shock and concern following the incident. Patricia Grant, a neighbour, described the scene as chaotic, with numerous police vehicles surrounding the street. She said the news of the murders came as a complete surprise. “Oh my god, there were cars everywhere, I couldn’t believe it,” she remarked. Grant also noted a growing unease in the community, mentioning that unfamiliar people had recently been approaching homes asking for cigarettes or money.

Another resident reported hearing loud arguments and disturbances at the property prior to the police arrival. He described the night as more rowdy than usual, with what sounded like a party disrupted by conflict. “I heard a little bit of yelling and doors constantly being slammed, banging on cars,” he said. The neighbour attributed some of the tension in the area to ongoing issues related to drug use.

Police continue to appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to assist with their inquiries as the investigation remains active.
