A Plainfield man has been charged with a hate crime following an incident involving a 9-year-old boy in Naperville. Jeffrey Feigenbaum, 29, faces two counts of hate crime along with misdemeanor battery and disorderly conduct charges, according to the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office. He appeared in court Sunday and was released under conditions including GPS monitoring.

Naperville police responded Saturday to the 1400 block of West Jefferson Avenue after reports that a white adult male had pushed a Black child and used a racial slur during an altercation. Authorities said the boy had been building a fort with friends nearby when a girl, identified as the daughter of Feigenbaum’s girlfriend, allegedly caused damage to the structure.

Following the damage, the boy approached the girl’s home on West Jefferson Avenue and knocked on the door. Prosecutors allege that Feigenbaum then came outside, directed a racial slur at the boy, pushed him, and threw the boy’s bicycle as he fled the scene.

During the court hearing on Sunday, the state’s request to detain Feigenbaum was denied. Instead, the court imposed conditions on his release, which include maintaining a distance of at least 5,000 feet from the boy, the boy’s residence, and his school. Additionally, Feigenbaum must surrender any weapons to Naperville police and remain under GPS monitoring.

Feigenbaum is scheduled to return to court on July 13 as the case continues. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the ongoing investigation.
