A 30-year-old man has been charged following a fatal hit-and-run incident in Brisbane’s southern suburbs last week. The incident occurred on Sunday near the Fruitgrove train station in Runcorn, where a 72-year-old woman from Kingston was struck by a blue Toyota HiLux traveling eastbound on Beenleigh Road.
Police allege that the driver ran a red light at a pedestrian crossing before hitting the woman, who sustained critical injuries and later died. Following the collision, the driver reportedly fled the scene.
Authorities discovered the vehicle burned out near a quarry in Sheldon soon after. Despite an extensive search, the driver remained missing for several days. On Friday, police located Reece Michael Barber at an address in Bahrs Scrub, Logan, and took him into custody.
Barber faces several charges, including dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, leaving the scene without assisting, damaging evidence with intent, and driving while disqualified. The case has been scheduled for a hearing at Holland Park Magistrates Court on July 30. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
